Little Beans Program

124_littlebeans_b&w_2inLittle Beans aims to encourage healthy nutrition and conscientious consumer habits for children ages 4-12. The Little Beans Kids Program was established by The 124 Grand Market in 2015. Inspired by the nationally-recognized POP (Power of Produce) Club at the Oregon City Farmers’ Market and SPROUTS  Kids Club at South West Edmonton Farmers Market. We had such a successful first year with the program reaching children in the city that we’ve decided to launch our program at both Grand Markets for 2016. Starting June 2 the Little Beans program will be available at both the 124 Grand Market in the Westmount community and the French Quarter Grand Market in the Bonnie Doon neighbourhood!

The Program Goals

Starting in June, parents can sign their children up for the Little Beans program at the *Information Tent* on Thursday evenings at the 124 Grand Market. Once signed up, each child will receive a token to exchange for a produce item or food plant of their choice from a number of participating vendors. Since we have expanded to two market locations, you will be able to use your token once per week at either location. The first 300 children who sign-up will be able to participate weekly in the program in 2017.

Little Beans will eventually extend beyond the weekly farmers’ market experience. Membership to the program will include access to the Grand Gardens Community Garden once it is launched (TBD) and will become integral part of the program. A designated raised bed for the Little Beans program will provide a learning garden where Little Beans will help grow a variety of vegetables and plants. This aspect of the program will connect the children to how their food is grown and illuminate all the interesting steps between farm and table.

Additionally, Little Beans will be offering FREE workshops and other programming at the markets, covering a range of topics pertaining to food growing, composting, healthy living, and environmental stewardship.

How It Works

Little Beans is a free, interactive and educational program that engages children and families with their farmer, the story of their food, and ultimately promotes healthy living.

  • Parents sign their children up and return to either market location each week to support the program and the market June to October
  • Kids receive a token to exchange for a produce item or food plant of their choice from a number of participating vendors
  • The market compensates all vendors for products purchased with Little Beans tokens

How You Can Help

We are working hard to improve children’s relationship with local food. We are happy to announce that due to our efforts in 2015, the Little Beans program received a Youth Environmental Engagement Award from the Alberta Emerald Foundation and have also been nominated for an Emerald Award for the program.

Sponsorship

We are seeking sponsorship on a full season, monthly, weekly or in-kind basis to support the program. The Grand Markets in Edmonton are very popular with a wide reaching demographic in two mature neighbourhoods in the city. We believe the exposure opportunities our market can provide for local businesses are immense, and your recognized support of the Little Beans children’s program is an excellent way to demonstrate your business’s commitment to the community. Please see our Sponsorship Package for the 2017 Market season, which outlines the program in more detail and the various sponsorship levels. If you are unable to support the program monetarily, we would also be happy for your promotional support to your networks! Please do not hesitate to email or call with any further questions. We look forward to partnering with you to encourage healthy, sustainable, local living in our next generation of market-goers!
